Research Officer Jobs at Concern Worldwide

Concern Worldwide is an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to elimination of extreme poverty. We are implementing a project titled Economic and Social Empowerment of the Extreme Poor (ESEP) project under Haor Programme. This project is being implemented in six Upazillas under Kishoregonj, Sunamgonj and Hobigonj districts for the duration up to November 2014. For this project currently we have opening for the following positions:

The Research Officer will be responsible for designing, implementation and quality reporting of all research works within the ESEP project which impacts on the lives of the extreme poor people living on the HAOR areas and results in lasting positive changes.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Identify research issues, design and write research proposals;
  • Take the lead to undertake research/action research project with support from relevant colleagues/unit/donor and write working papers specifically focused on extreme poverty;
  • Design appropriate research tools in the field (such as in-depth interviews, surveys, focus group discussions, unstructured observations) and lead the process of analyzing data for drawing conclusion what interventions of project impacting on the lives of Beneficiary HHs, what not and why;
  • Lead enumeration teams to undertake various CMS surveys-specifically the quarterly socio-economic and annual anthropometric surveys (CMS-3) and Life Histories & Reflections on the Interventions (CMS-5);
  • Identify key questions arising from CMS analysis and project experience interpreting those to benefit the project;
  • With support from the M&E Officer, diagnose performance of CBOs based on the feedback from SHGs and respective communities;
  • Measure results of on-farm and off-farm activities and their impact on food availability, income and sustainability;
  • Facilitate discussion and prioritize issues in the EPRG forum and plan future studies and carry out next course of actions;
  • Closely work with SHIREE to formulate quantitative and qualitative research tool and methodologies, ensure quality of data collection; data organizing and cleaning by the Research Associate and team for the purpose;
  • Disseminate research findings with NGO staff, the Shiree Operations Team and other audiences like APPG, National Haor Convention; present research findings in the EPRG forum and support the advocacy team with solid evidence of research outcomes.

Key Requirements:
  • Masters in Social Science with good academic records (Development Studies, Demography/Economics/Sociology/Anthropology are preferred);
  • Four years progressive experience in similar position in the field of development;
  • Comprehensive skills in designing and applying quantitative or qualitative research tools and techniques;
  • Competent in undertaking quantitative data analysis using computer software particularly SPSS and ACCESS;
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to document research findings, case studies etc;
  • Commitment to reducing extreme poverty and identifying changes among beneficiaries;
  • Enthusiasm for field work and willingness to spend 40-50% of the time in the field;
  • Strong awareness and sensitivity to gender issues associated with conducting fieldwork throughout Bangladesh;
  • Ability to build partnerships with a broad range of partner NGOs and consortium partners.

Salary for this position: Taka 53,089 /- per month with other regular benefits (negotiable for highly competent candidates)
